Preserving our environment one shoreline at a time

beach clean up

Introduction:

World Beach Day – 1st September - is a dedicated time to raise awareness and encourage action towards preserving coastal ecosystems. As we appreciate the beauty and tranquillity of beaches, it is essential to recognise the significant link between clean beaches and a healthy environment. In this post, we will explore the importance of clean beaches and their direct impact on the overall well-being of our planet.

Beaches - ecological gems:

Beaches are not just popular vacation spots; they are ecological gems that support diverse ecosystems. Coastal areas serve as habitats for a wide range of marine life, including fish, birds, turtles, and various plant species. These ecosystems are delicate and intricately balanced, with each component playing a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and overall environmental health.

Environmental challenges:

However, beaches face numerous environmental challenges that threaten their health and integrity. Pollution, including plastic debris, chemical runoff, and oil spills, poses a severe threat to marine life and habitats. Additionally, climate change-induced sea level rise and coastal erosion further endanger these precious ecosystems. It is imperative to address these challenges to ensure the long-term health and survival of our beaches.

Clean beaches are closely interconnected with the health of our environment. Here are some key connections:

Biodiversity preservation: clean beaches provide vital habitats for a diverse array of species. By keeping our beaches clean and free from pollution, we protect the delicate balance of these ecosystems and preserve biodiversity.

Ocean conservation: beaches are integral components of the coastal zone, which is intricately connected to the health of our oceans. Maintaining clean beaches helps prevent pollution and the contamination of nearby marine environments, ensuring the well-being of marine ecosystems.

Climate change mitigation: healthy beaches with thriving vegetation, such as dunes and coastal vegetation, act as natural buffers against storms and erosion. These natural barriers can help mitigate the impacts of climate change, protecting coastal communities and preventing further environmental damage.

Public health: clean beaches not only benefit the environment but also directly impact human health. Contaminated beaches pose risks to swimmers and beachgoers, leading to illnesses and infections. By maintaining clean beaches, we promote public health and ensure safe recreational spaces for all.

Taking action:

During World Beach Day, we can all contribute to preserving our environment by taking simple yet impactful actions.

Reduce plastic use: minimise single-use plastic consumption and properly dispose of any plastic waste to prevent it from reaching the beaches and oceans.

Participate in cleanups: join or organise beach cleanups to remove litter and debris from the shoreline, preventing pollution and protecting marine life.

Practice responsible tourism: when visiting beaches, follow local guidelines, respect wildlife and their habitats, and leave no trace of your presence.

Support conservation efforts: engage with local environmental organisations and initiatives working towards beach preservation and support their efforts through donations or volunteering.

MBM Omega’s contribution:

At MBM Omega we offer all clients the option to have a single use plastics (SUP) audit run on their product usage. This identifies products that rely on single use plastics - for example, wrapping, shrink wrap, cellophane etc - and offers alternatives which reduces our clients’ single use plastic usage but still match our clients’ product needs. This, combined with our green audit (a supplementary process looking at swapping non eco products to environmentally friendly ones), is called our GoEco audit and be requested by emailing gogreen@mbm-omega.co.uk

Conclusion:

Clean beaches are not just idyllic locations for relaxation and enjoyment; they play a critical role in maintaining a healthy environment. By understanding the link between clean beaches and the overall well-being of our planet, we can actively contribute to their preservation. During World Beach Day and beyond, let us come together to protect these valuable ecosystems, reduce pollution, and ensure the long-term health of our beaches and the environment as a whole.
