The benefits of recycling your ink cartridges in London just got bigger

29 November 2012

MBM Omega, a leading independent supplier of office products based in Leatherhead, has raised over £2,200 for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity by encouraging customers to recycle their used ink cartridges.

Rainbow Trust provides individually tailored support to families with a child who has a life threatening or terminal illness. Kimberley Butterfield, Corporate Partnerships Manager for Rainbow Trust says “We’re really grateful to MBM Omega for all their support in raising this fantastic amount of money. This is such a simple way to raise money and the fact that it is beneficial to both the environment and to helping support sick children is really encouraging for more people to recycle their ink cartridges”.

The money raised is enough to pay all the transport costs of one of Rainbow Trust’s Family Support Workers for four months. Driving is a big part of a Family Support Worker’s job. The families Rainbow Trust support have to cope with numerous hospital visits for appointments and admissions for treatment. For many families this involves travelling long distances to unfamiliar cities as well as dealing with the complexities of public transport, finding the hospital and juggling care of their very sick child and siblings. Unlike hospital transport, which is limited to the sick child and one parent, Rainbow Trust provides transport for the whole family.

A standard inkjet cartridge takes three pounds of material to make, including 3.5oz of oil, and over 300 million of them are thrown away every year. These cartridges will take thousands of years to decompose in landfills, and currently we’re adding 75,000 tons to those dumps annually, costing ourselves even more in waste management.

“By encouraging our customers to recycle their empty inkjet and toner cartridges we are not only helping the environment, we are also raising vital money for charity,” said Diane Green, marketing manager at MBM Omega. “All proceeds are donated to our official charity partner, Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity so every cartridge our customers return helps Rainbow Trust provide emotional and practical support for families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.”

MBM Omega has raised the amount by donating all money received from recycling the cartridges straight to Rainbow Trust.
